Use the three-label essentials.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing sunscreen labeled broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistant. Broad-spectrum refers to UVA and UVB coverage; water resistance still has a time limit on the label.
Build the routine around the product directions.
Apply a topical cosmetic only as directed for its exact product and area. Let the routine remain simple enough to repeat, and use sunscreen on exposed skin during the day. Reapply according to the label, especially after swimming or sweating.
Do not confuse appearance claims with protection.
A serum described as supporting smoother-looking or firmer-looking skin is not a sunscreen unless it is specifically labeled and regulated as one. “Antioxidant,” “repair,” or “anti-aging” language does not establish an SPF or broad-spectrum result.
